PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Scope: Redesign Information Architecture, Target Two User Groups, Accessibility Compliance, Responsive Design, User Research and Testing, Project Development
My Role:
 UX design
Project Duration: 6 months
Methodology: Agile

The project involved designing and developing a new website for the Activation Foundation with the primary objective of reorganizing its information architecture. Website needed to cater to two main target groups: individuals with disabilities seeking employment and employers interested in hiring individuals with disability certifications. Additionally, the project aimed to refresh the visual identity of the foundation’s website to maintain brand recognition while introducing a new, lighter aesthetic that reflects the organization’s professionalism and direct engagement with its audience. Ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards was also a key component of the project.

CHALLANGE

The main challenge was to create a website that effectively serves two distinct user groups—job seekers with disabilities and employers looking to hire them—while maintaining a cohesive and recognizable brand identity. Balancing the need for a visually appealing design with the necessity of accessibility posed a significant challenge. Additionally, reorganizing the information architecture to provide intuitive navigation and relevant content for both user groups required careful planning and execution.

SOLUTION

To address these challenges, the project team undertook a comprehensive redesign of the website’s information architecture. User research was conducted to understand the specific needs and expectations of both target groups. Based on these insights, a new site map was developed to facilitate easy navigation and access to essential information for job seekers and employers alike. The visual design was refreshed to introduce a lighter and more modern look while preserving the foundation’s existing visual identity to ensure brand continuity. The design process incorporated accessibility best practices to ensure the website meets WCAG 2.1 criteria, including features like keyboard navigation, appropriate color contrasts, and alternative text for images. Prototypes and mockups were created and tested with representative users to validate design decisions and gather feedback for iterative improvements.

OUTCOME

New redesigned website successfully met the objectives of reorganizing the information architecture and catering to the needs of both target groups. Users found the website easier to navigate, with clear pathways to relevant information for job seekers and employers. The refreshed visual design enhanced the foundation’s professional image while making the site more inviting and user-friendly. Compliance with WCAG 2.1 standards ensured that the website is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Overall, the project resulted in a more effective and inclusive online presence for the Activation Foundation, strengthening its ability to connect with and support its key audiences.
